Calibration
Designing an Electronic Control Unit (or ECU) is only the beginning. Implementing the design into the vehicle and achieving the required performance in less time is the opportunity. ECUs, such as Powertrain Control Units, are quickly becoming more complex and offering more features. The algorithms defining these features and functions can be accomplished in models, but achieving planned performance of these complex models in the real-world environment is becoming more challenging. Hundreds of variables are provided for the engineer to modify during the in-vehicle calibration phase, and fine tuning them is as complicated as it is critical.
The calibration tool significantly impacts the efficiency and effectiveness of the ECU development process. The tool must be able to measure and time-align relationships of inputs and outputs and make real-time modifications. The best tool will provide a graphical, easy to understand presentation of the data that enables the user to quickly and effectively make adjustments.
ATI developed its own calibration tool based on the user's perspective. Working closely with a wide range of calibrators, ATI developed VISION, an easy to use calibration interface, with innovative benefits such as simplifying repetitive tasks or providing multiple triggers to conduct many tests at once. VISION allows the addition or removal of variables online or offline with only a mouse click or drag-and-drop.
